Category:Songs written by Geoff DeaneSam Adler, who runs the Share Our Strength Coalition’s one-million-member food justice network, is not surprised by how powerful food has become. Before there were food movements, there were food riots—and Adler has been directly involved in three.
When I first talked with him, he was running the Food and Justice Fellowship at the University of Missouri, where he worked with 15 students to create a five-year plan for the school that would tackle hunger in their community and beyond. In the middle of this work, he did a year’s tour of South Asia, sharing his experiences on hunger issues and working with many of the same issues he was addressing in his home country. Back in the U.S., he wanted to try a new type of activism to supplement his academic work, and as a major-market chain moved in near the university, he led a strike.
